Plans and programmes

Regional and national plans guide and facilitate the implementation of activities aimed at meeting legal obligations and achieving policy directions. At the regional level, SPREP in 2010 approved a five year Strategic Plan 2011-2015, that outlines the strategic priorities towards meeting its mandate under the 1993 Agreement Establishing SPREP. SPREP has also facilitated the formulation and endorsement of a number of key regional plans in the strategic priority areas:
  • Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change
  • Action Strategy for Nature Conservation
  • Solid Waste Management Strategy for the Pacific Region

At the national level, Members have formulated a number of national plans to meet their obligations under Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). These include:
  • Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) - National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA) and Joint National Action Plans on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction (JNAP)
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan (NBSAP)
  • Convention for Combating Desertification (CCD) – National Implementation Plan (NIP)
  • Waste and Pollution – National Waste Management Strategy and National Marine Spill Plans

What we do

In the early 1990's SPREP assisted its Members to formulate their National Environment Management Strategies (NEMS). These documents integrated all the national environmental priorities including those under the MEAs. One of the key activities of the EMG Division is to assist SPREP Members to review and reformulate their NEMS.
