Regional and International Instruments
The Pacific Islands Countries are parties to a number of biodiversity related multi-lateral environmental agreements. SPREP currently assists with a number of these biodiversity focused international instruments including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
SPREP supports the participation of Pacific countries that are parties to these agreements by providing a focal point for the sharing and dissemination of information, assisting with regional preparatory meetings and facilitating the building of capacity of Pacific participants to enable them to effectively participate in negotiations with other parties and implement commitment and actions required under these conventions. SPREP also provides advisory and technical support to promote and encourage accession to the MEAs.
