Climate Change Resilience
The prospect of a new global climate agreement at COP21 in Paris creates an opportunity to accelerate an energy transition for small islands. SIDS Lighthouses is a UN endorsed initiative by IRENA to accelerate an orderly transition of SIDS energy sectors to renewable energy. This will bring significant social and economic benefits. The initiative will proceed to scale up these efforts with enhanced financing and capacity building. The initiative aims to mobilise USD 500 million in funding.

Four meetings were planned in the preparation for COP, in La Martinique, Honolulu, Kuala Lumpur, and Cape Town. SPREP attend the Kuala Lumpur workshop which focused on the formulation of a framework to put the action agenda into practice, including identification of concrete projects and financing.

The workshop also provided a platform to shared information about existing and emerging financial structures for renewable energy investments in SIDS – including development and climate financing; identify the main sources currently accessible as well as potential new sources of financing for SIDS, as well as challenges encountered; identify project ideas and activities that could be further developed as part of the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative; and provide a platform for developing networks among various stakeholders who are engaged in the promotion of renewable energy in SIDS partners, including the Pacific Climate Change Portal and the Regional Technical Support Mechanism.
