In line with the ‘Cleaner Pacific 2025’ [JP1] [JP2] Strategy, SWAP project focuses on four thematic areas that are:

  1. Used oil management,
  2. Disaster waste management,
  3. Marine debris management, and
  4. Sustainable financing mechanisms. [NW3] [JP4]

These four thematic areas will be addressed through the following three components:

Component 1: Regional Training Program

The training program covers all thematic areas of SWAP. It consists of the theory of waste management practice and project management with a presentation of successful case studies and demonstration of best practices from the Pacific, and other countries with similar conditions.

Experts from the Pacific region are involved in the development and delivery of the training modules.

The training programme will initially is planned in two steps, including a first virtual session, in French and English, open to all SPREP island Members.  The second phase consists of face-to-face refresher training with on-site practical modules for SWAP islands: Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna.

Component 2: Implementation of Pilot Projects

Pilot projects addressing the four thematic areas of SWAP will be established in SWAP islands. The activities carried out will aim at addressing the specific needs of each member according to the priorities identified and specific to each territory.

Component 3: Community of Practice

The Community of Practice component will see an exchange of knowledge and best practices in the waste sector to strengthen the capacity of the region.  This platform will see a sharing of project results, including progress, challenges and lessons learned.

Workshops and meetings will also be held and will cover the four thematic areas of the SWAP project.

It is expected that this component will involve all Pacific islands.
