Strong Pacific interest in the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion at the Twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27) in November has seen an extension in the deadline for side event submissions to 17 September 2022.
In the spirit of Pacific Partnership, Aotearoa, New Zealand with regional agencies is hosting a Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion for which a significant number of Pacific focused side events will be showcased. This will be similar to the “Pacific and Koronivia Pavilion” at COP24 in Katowice, Poland in 2018 and the “Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion” at COP25 in Madrid, Spain in 2019.
“Since announcing we were open for side event submissions, we’ve been overwhelmed with queries,” said Ms Nanette Woonton, Acting Communications and Outreach Adviser of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
“It’s imperative that our One Pacific Voice is echoed throughout the halls of the OP27 venue, and our pavilion is just one platform that can help make that happen. We are committed to making this happen with our Pacific islands and partners.”
The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion aims to bring the Pacific voice and experience to the delegates at COP27, telling Pacific climate change stories.
The themes of Adaptation, Article 6, Capacity Building, Climate Finance, Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement, Loss and Damage, Climate Ambition, Technology development and transfer as well as Transparency in meeting the national climate targets and actions - will be taken into consideration when side event applications are being reviewed.
The overarching themes to be mainstreamed into side events hosted in the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion are ambitious climate action and commitments for the 1.5-degree Celsius temperature goal; gender equity and social inclusion; protection and sustaining our Pacific Ocean; and our Pacific Island voices, culture and traditions.
“This is our opportunity to bring the Pacific Islands to the global climate stage at Sharm el-Sheikh at COP27 this year,” said Ms Woonton.
“We have been fielding a number of queries, and encourage those that are interested to please reach out to our team, we’ll work with you to ensure your submission is received, giving our Pacific Islands the opportunity to be heard at this crucial event.”
Side event slots within the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion will be available from 7 – 18 November 2022, with the first event to being at 10am each day and the last event at 5pm. Each event will be given 50 minutes.
