The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) through the Global Environment Fund-UN Environment funded Inform project have announced the launch of the Environmental Indicator Guidebook, to be held virtually on 22 September 2021.
Through the Inform project, SPREP programmes have contributed to the development of 34 indicators that were endorsed by Members at the 28th SPREP Meeting of Officials in 2018. These indicators are intended for use in State of Environment Reports (SOEs) and other reporting obligations.
The guidebook explains the development and use of environmental indicators and provides a summary of each of the 34 core indicators across six broad themes. An ‘indicator in action’ in Pacific Island countries is presented in each theme and examples of data trends are presented for all 34 indicators.
Inform Project Manager, Mr Paul Anderson, said, “This Guidebook is a great tool for Pacific island countries as it can aid in the development of their respective SOEs and other reports to ensure they have consistent knowledge make informed decisions on sustainable development.”
An environmental indicator is a measurement that provides insight into a matter of larger environmental significance. Indicators quantify information so its significance is readily apparent and so that trends can be determined over time, and they also simplify complex phenomena which helps in communicating messages to decision makers and the public.
The Environmental Indicator Guidebook for Pacific Island Countries has been made available via print of e-copy to SPREP’s Member countries, and can also be downloaded at this link: https://pacific-data.sprep.org/dataset/environmental-indicators-pacific-island-countries.
About the Inform project
The Inform Project is funded by the Global Environment Facility, implemented by UN Environment and executed by SPREP. The project is setting up national environment data portals in 14 Pacific island countries including Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
