Island and Ocean Ecosystems
With less than a hundred days before the start of the biggest Pacific nature conservation conference, preparations are well on their way to making this yet another memorable event for biodiversity conservation in the region.

Due to a number of requests to extend the registration period, the deadline for registration for the 9th Pacific Island Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas has been extended to 31st October, 2013. In line with the extension to the registration period, the due date for conference registration fees has also been extended to 31st October.

“We’ve had an amazing response from people who want to know more about the conference and who need a bit more time to prepare and register,” said Ms. Easter Galuvao the Biodiversity Adviser at the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

“This conference belongs to our Pacific islands region and we believe in making it accessible for all, hence the decision to extend the registration.”

PIC1Facilitators at the 9th Pacific Island Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas meet in Alotau, Papua New Guinea to prepare for the Conference proper.  Preparations are underway for the upcoming 9th Conference in Suva, Fiji.

The theme of the 2013 conference is Natural Solutions:  Building Resilience for a Changing Pacific and will be held in Suva, Fiji from 2 – 6 December.  The conference is held every 4 to 5 years and is an opportunity to review the implementation of the previous cycle’s Action Strategy on Nature Conservation.

Participants are also able to provide input towards a new strategy to guide conservation efforts in the Pacific for the ensuing years.

Alotau, Papua New Guinea was the host of the 8th Conference in 2007.

To assist those who may have problems with the online registration system, a downloadable registration form (MS Word Document) has been added to the conference website registration page (http://www.sprep.org/pacificnatureconference/registration).  Details on registration, the online registration form and payment details are also available on the registration page.
