18 April, Apia, Samoa - The Clean Pacific Campaign was celebrated as the theme of the G'day Samoa Fun Run and Walk last Saturday morning.
The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) was pleased to be part of the event which is coordinated monthly by the Australian High Commission in Samoa and supported by a range of partners.
Each month there is a different theme for the event and the April theme was Clean Pacific, which saw over 700 people coming together to celebrate the campaign which promotes better waste management throughout the region.
The early morning event consists of a 3km walk or 5km run along the seawall on Beach Road in Apia. It begins with a warm up by CultureX of Island Zumba followed by a free healthy breakfast for those that complete the walk. A special highlight of the event was the Manumea mascot taking part in the walk and raising excitement.
"We were honored to be able to highlight the Clean Pacific at this event. Seeing everyone wearing green in support was just amazing," said Mr. Kosi Latu, the Acting Director General of SPREP.
"We were also pleased that after the event there were people that disposed of their rubbish in bins, however, we can always do better, and encourage everyone to do what they can to bring about a Clean Pacific".
A prize giving sponsored by local partners in Samoa takes place at the end of the Fun Run. Ten packs consisting of goods donated by the different work areas in SPREP were also part of these giveaways at the Clean Pacific Fun Run.
"It was a really successful event with a huge turnout, and all our resources displayed at our booth were distributed and extremely popular. Congratulations to the Australian High Commission and partners for coordinating such exciting events, we look forward to the next one!"
