30 May, 2018 - The Australian Government signed an AU$12 million dollar agreement today with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), formalising its ongoing commitment toward providing core support for SPREP’s sustainable development programs for its 21 Pacific island Members over the next three years.
The new agreement, signed at SPREP’s headquarters in Apia, Samoa, builds on Australia’s current support to the regional organisation’s practical programs in the Pacific aimed at protecting island and ocean ecosystems, encouraging sustainable development, assisting in climate change adaptation and improving the management of solid waste.
Speaking at the signing, SPREP Director General, Mr Kosi Latu, said “Australia has maintained a strong partnership with SPREP and in return its Pacific island Members, ensuring that SPREP is able to continue to support and provide key services to the region. SPREP applauds and thanks the Australian Government for its commitment in the environment and livelihoods of the Pacific people.”
Australia’s High Commissioner to Samoa, Ms Sara Moriarty, commended SPREP for its important role in protecting the Pacific’s environment and natural resources for future generations.
“Australia is proud to support the vital work of SPREP and we look forward to continuing our long and successful partnership,” said Ms Moriarty.
The organisation works at the forefront of regional efforts to address environmental concerns by providing national-level technical advice, programme support, capacity building and coordinated regional responses to global issues and international agreements.

The new agreement becomes effective in July 2018 and builds on Australia’s previous AU$18.25 million multiyear grant arrangement with SPREP in 2013.
SPREP is the regional inter-governmental organisation charged with the protection and sustainable management of the Pacific island region's environment. This year SPREP commemorates 25 years of service to the Pacific island region, having signed the agreement establishing the Pacific intergovernmental regional environment organisation in June, 1993.
The organisation works at the forefront of regional efforts to address environmental concerns by providing national-level technical advice, programme support, capacity building and coordinated regional responses to global issues and international agreements.
