Climate Change Resilience
The Vanuatu Meteorology, National Red Cross and the National Disaster Office have selected Epau Village on Efate to carry out their project interventions.
In January 2015, SPREP and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Climate Centre met with the Vanuatu stakeholders to set up a National Coordination Team (NCT) to take on the role of implementing the Finnish-Pacific (FINPAC) project at the Epau community. The NCT comprises of the National Red Cross, Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department, the National Disaster Management Office, University of the South Pacific and the IFRC Climate Centre based in Port Vila.
SPREP and the team met with the Chief and village elders of Epau as well as the Secretary General of the SHEFA Provincial government to introduce the project. The community consultation on Climate and Disaster Resilience Planning is planned for mid-March and will be followed by the implementation of a small scale project in the community to demonstrate how climate and weather information can be applied to day-to-day activities. In the meantime, the team is preparing to carry out a baseline survey of the community.
