Friday 29th August, Apia, Samoa - On Monday the 1st of September, the Government of Tonga will lead the SIDS side event, Building Pacific Resilience – the Strategy for Climate and Disaster Resilient Development in the Pacific (SRDP), showcasing the work of the Pacific in integrating climate change and disaster risk management. The Secretariat of Pacific Communities (SPC), Secretariat of Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) will support the event.

The Pacific is leading the way, globally, on this process as it will be the first region in the world to fully integrate disaster risk management and climate change in a single overarching regional strategy, which focusses on resilient development.
“Samoa is committed to mainstreaming and integration of DRR, climate change and sustainable development across all sectors and this is evident in having a specific result area and outcome for climate change and disaster resilience in the Strategy for the Development of Samoa 2012-2018..... I believe the Integrated Strategy for Climate and Disaster Resilient Development in the Pacific will be a great mechanism to garner these much needed partnerships in our Region to facilitate and support implementation on the ground. - Hon. Faamoetauloa Lealaiauloto Taito Dr. Faale Tumaalii – Minister for MNRE, Government of Samoa.
The key note address will be given by the Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakanō and the session will be moderated by Margareta Wahlström, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The Panel will include the Hon. Minister Faamoetauloa Ulaitino Faale Tumaalii from Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, Mr Jacob Werksman the Principal Adviser for DG CLIMA European Union, Mrs Emele Duituturaga, the Executive Director for Pacific Islands Alliance of NGOs (PIANGO) and Mr.Howard Politini the Vice Chair of the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO).
