Climate Change Resilience
18 December 2017, Apia, Samoa - The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has signed new project agreements with the Federated States of Micronesia and Vanuatu for the delivery of over two projects with a combined budget of over USD 27 million to address priority climate resilient development challenges.
"These are historic agreements for SPREP and our Members" Director General Kosi Latu says, continuing "because these are the first projects for SPREP where SPREP will be serving our Members as the Accredited Entity"
In Vanuatu SPREP will support the Vanuatu Meteorology logical and Geohazards Department (VMGD) deliver a USD 20.5 million Green Climate Fund Climate Information Services for Resilient Development project. The project has a focus on supporting development and delivery of climate and weather information to community and development sectors to support more resilient policy, planning and decision making.
"This is an important project for Vanuatu, as it will help inform future development across 5 key development sectors at national, provincial and community levels" Mr Jesse Benjamin, Secretary General of the Ministry of Climate Change said. "I believe it will not only have direct benefits, but will enhance the climate resilience of our country by mainstreaming climate information into ongoing development initiatives" he added.
In FSM SPREP will support the Department of the Environment Climate Change and Emergency Management deliver a USD 9 million Enhancing the Climate Change Resilience of Vulnerable Communities in FSM project.

The project will deliver a range of initiatives to address the pressing water security and coastal resilience challenges across the four states of the country.
"It's been a challenge and learning process for FSM, working closely with SPREP as a direct access entity to get this project approved" Secretary Andrew Yatilman says, adding "however we now have the funding secured and I am confident and very excited about delivering this project with SPREP from early next year, starting with the Inception Workshop that we have planned for March".
"We are very proud of this achievement made with our country Members" said Mr Latu "and we look forward to implementing these projects from early 2018. Further we look forward to expanding the portfolio of projects like these for the region".
SPREP coordinates delivery of projects through the GCF and AF via a new Project Coordination Unit, which from 2018 will have 2 new Project Development Experts to support design of new projects for SPREPs member Countries.
