Island and Ocean Ecosystems
12 December 2016, CBD COP13, Cancun Mexico - There are 20 Aichi Targets in all, endorsed at the tenth Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Nagoya, Japan in 2010. They help to meet five different strategic goals which aim to reduce the loss of biodiversity by the year 2020. Each day during the CBD COP13 we'll be sharing one of the Targets with you and examples of how the Pacific islands are meeting these. – #PacificProtectedAreas
Strategic Goal B: Reduce the direct pressures on biodiversity and promote sustainable use
Target 8: By 2020, pollution, including from excess nutrients, has been brought to levels that are not detrimental to ecosystem function and biodiversity.
"We are facing some major challenges in conserving our biodiversity from impacts of pollution, waste management issues and unsustainable agricultural practices in Samoa. However, I am encouraged that some level of cooperation with key sectors and stakeholders has been established to address these challenges in a more integrated manner. We are also counting on the support from regional and international partners to assist in tackling these challenges to ensure our biodiversity and ecosystem services are maintained and sustained." – Ms Fuatino Matatumua Leota, Assistance Chief Executive Officer, Division of Environment and Conservation, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Samoa.
