8 November 2016, UNFCCC COP22, Marrakech, Morocco - Lessons from Papua New Guinea's REDD+ activities for the past five years can be a useful guide for those interested in implementing similar approaches in their own countries.
REDD+ is referred to as the efforts to 'Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, and plus (+) conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests, and enhancements of forest carbon stocks.
Under the REDD+ initiative, PNG is preparing to implement REDD+ as part of its contribution to tackle global climate change through the Paris Agreement.

A panel of experts from the PNG Government provided an update on PNG's REDD+ progress at a side event during the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP22).
"PNG is said to have the third largest most undisturbed rainforest in the world", said Mr Alfred Rungol, the Manager for the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) with the Climate Change Development Authority of PNG.
"Through the Paris Agreement, the PNG Government is preparing to implement the REDD+ as part of its contribution to tackle global climate change."
PNG's forest resources contribute significantly to the national economy which also has a globally significant area of forest that provides vital environment benefits.
"The PNG Government with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility are now working towards developing a National Strategy/Action Plan (NS/AP) to ensure the full and effective participation of relevant stakeholders," said Ms Rensie Panda, Senior Policy Analyst with the Climate Change and Development Authority under PNG's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
"Through the NS/AP it will provide the platform to create a clear plan for the implementation of national policies and measures that will reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation."
Papua New Guinea is part of the 13 Pacific Island country delegations attending COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco from 7 to 18 November, 2016. In all there are 14 Pacific islands that are Parties to the UNFCCC. – By Jone Tuiipelehaki Raqauqau reporting from UNFCCC COP 22 #4PacIslands
