Climate Change Resilience
Negotiators from the Fiji delegation to the upcoming 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) had the opportunity last month (October 9th to 11th) to fine tune their skills as they prepare for the COP to be held in Paris this year.

1 Fiji negotiators prepare for the Paris Climate Change Conference

With support from GIZ, resource personnel from SPREP, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), University of the South Pacific (USP) and SPC (Secretariat of the Pacific Community) worked together to deliver a two day workshop in Suva, Fiji, for the national delegation who will be representing the country in Paris.

This training event covered a wide range of areas providing scientific and technical briefings on some of the key issues that will be negotiated in Paris, including issues relating to mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage to the adverse impacts of climate change, and climate finance.

According to Fiji’s Director of Climate Change, Mr Peter Emberson, the UNFCCC COP 21 “…will mark an important juncture as countries converge into Paris to negotiate the terms for a new binding treaty to address, if not help stem the tide of runaway climate change”.
