Deforestation - Papua New Guinea
Climate change - Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea (PNG) has high rates of deforestation and forest degradation and high forest cover. The primary drivers of deforestation and forest degradation include subsistence/smallholder agriculture, forest logging, commercial agriculture, and other land use change associated with fire, infrastructure development and mining. The estimated rate of deforestation and forest degradation is between 0.7%–1.1% (low and high scenario) Estimates of the potential emissions savings from reducing deforestation in Papua New Guinea range from 98–112 MtCO2e /year by 2030. The Office of Climate Change and Development (OCCD) has developed the Climate compatible Development Strategy to achieve these abatement opportunities.
