In 1991, a Convention on Wetlands of International Importance also known as "The RAMSAR Convention", identified several wetlands of international importance. Member countries of over 70 receive technical advise from this convention. As part of it's plan of Action, it defines a Wetland, places emphasis on their importance, and highlights the impact of development on these sites such as the dispossesion of birds and animals living on these wetlands. RAMSAR promotes the wise and sustainable use of these areas.
