Tongan Myths and Tales

The printing press has undoubtedly done more to preserve the extant Tongan myths and legends than has oral transmission. Fortunately both the Wesleyan methodist and the Roman Catholic churches in Tonga adopted the broad policy or publishing in their Tongan language magazines many stories from raconteurs now long dead. A number of tales presented in the following pages are drawn from these sources.
