The Persistent Organic Pollutants in Pacific Island Countries (POPs in PICs), Phase II – Scheduled POPs and Intractable Pesticide Disposal Project was a seven-year project to reduce the threat posed by POPs and related chemicals toward the environment and human health in Pacific Island Countries. The Project was undertaken in the Pacific Region and included 12 PICs. The Project commenced in April 2003 and was completed in June 2009, at a total cost of AUD 6.57 Mil, funded by AusAID. The Project was delivered under the aid modality of ‘project support’, by Australian Managing Contractor, GHD, in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). The Project goal addressed country, regional and international priority issues, and is in alignment with the highest priority waste management issues in the Pacific as identified by SPREP member countries in the Waste Management Action Plan 1997-2000, and the objective of the Stockholm Convention. The mechanisms of the Basel or Waigani Convention were utilised for approvals to import the repackaged waste POPs into Australia for destruction.
