If you know of Pacific island people or organisations that have shown innovation and, or outstanding commitment in the field of environmental media, then now is the time to nominate them for the 2020 Pacific Islands Environment Leadership Awards media category.
The Pacific Islands Environment Leadership Award for excellence in leadership and innovation in environmental media is open for nominations until 12 June 2020.
The winner of the award will be announced during the 10th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas to be hosted in New Caledonia. The Conference has been postponed due to COVID-19, the new date is still yet to be confirmed.
The award will recognise Pacific islands media contributions that have demonstrated outstanding achievements that promote and advocate for biodiversity and ecosystem protection, environmental governance, climate change adaptation and resilience, and waste management pollution control for environmental sustainability.
“We have seen our Pacific islands media grow in environmental advocacy over the years, as environmental challenges continue to reach and effect all parts of our lives,” said Ms Makereta Komai, Manager of the Pacific Islands News Association.
“This Award is the opportunity to recognise and commend the efforts of our Pacific island media workers is an awesome initiative given the work in our region by our media, we encourage many to take the time to nominate candidates.”
The award may also recognise Pacific islands media contributions to environmental sustainability, going beyond news stories or features, and is open to other actions that media are doing for our environment.
“Since SPREP embarked on our SPREP Media Outreach Programme over a decade ago, we have seen really awesome impacts with the increased understanding of our environmental issues and challenges, as well as growing networks between our media and our environment practitioners,” said Ms Nanette Woonton, Media and Public Relations Officer of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
“Through this award, SPREP is paying tribute to the work of our Pacific islands media – showing our appreciation for the role that media are playing in helping our Pacific environment. We are looking forward to seeing the nominations come in!”
The deadline for nominations is 12 June 2020, and a form is available to fill in and two referees will be needed for the judging panel to contact for further information on your nomination.
