A resource designed to provide anyone in the Pacific – or anywhere in the world - access to Pacific biodiversity data, will be launched on Friday 1st October 2021.
The Pacific Biodiversity Information Facility (PBIF) will be launched by the Director General of Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Program (SPREP), Kosi Latu, who will introduce the tool during a virtual event.
“The development of PBIF is a very important step in an effort to provide anyone, especially interested parties in SPREP member countries, with important data about all types of life in this part of the world. At SPREP, we believe there are economic and social benefits our members can reap from being able to access such important information,” said Mr. Latu.
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) hosts PBIF.
It was customised by SPREP’s Invasive Species Team. Team members David Moverley and Bradley Myer will provide a demonstration during the launch.
PBIF offers advanced data search, browse, map visualisation and an image gallery. Search results are scoped to include a relevant defined subset data mobilised by a thematic network, or published by organisations within a country.
PBIF is available in ten Pacific languages and will present all of the biodiversity data available from the following Pacific island countries and territories: American Samoa, Cook Islands, East Timor, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Hawaii, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Northern Marianas, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis & Futuna.
