Did you know that the ocean sustains 80% of life on Earth? Did you know that it generates 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions?
The ocean provides us with food, livelihoods and energy sources, it is home to most of the earth’s biodiversity and is the main source of protein for billions of people globally.
These facts about the ocean and other environmental issues are critical information for the public which is why the Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme (SPREP) has developed a series of quizzes designed to support children and adults alike through a virtual, fun and interactive way to learn and test their knowledge about the Pacific environment. Each quiz will focus on a different topic and will have no more than 10 questions. The first quiz, launched on 22 August will centre on the ocean.
With warming oceans, depleted fish stocks and dying coral reefs, we are now taking more from the ocean faster than it can replenish. The ocean is our lifeline, and we must do all we can to protect this vital piece of our biosphere. Education and awareness of the ocean leads us to better understanding of how to look after it together. At the United Nations Ocean Conference 2022 this was echoed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Director General, Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra “the ocean is ours, and as such, our solutions for improved ocean health must be done together”.
SPREP challenges you to find out more about our ocean by participating in the SPREP Our Ocean quiz https://quizizz.com/pro/join?gc=48896189.
