Fisheries resource assessment - Suva Harbour - Fiji
Urbanization in the South Pacific often results in the increase in construction for roads, ports, hotels, industries, marinas, shopping complexes and residential lots; which are closely linked to population expansion and elevated coastal development activities, that would lead to habitat degradations, biodiversity changes, marine pollution and fisheries resources depletion. Clearly, this is the case scenario for the greater Suva urban areas, having a direct detrimental impact to the adjoining coastal environments through continuous and increased sedimentation from soil erosion emanating from steep hill agriculture, poor forestry or logging practices, effluents from factories and households, and other activities such as dredging and reclamation.
