Japan is dependent on foreign sources for most of the energy that produces the greater part of its carbon dioxide emmsions. Through this dependence has been reduced somewhat by introducing oil substitutes in recent years, it remains slightly above 80 percent, leaving Japan highly exposed to the effects of supply fluctuations. Final energy consumption increased substantially throughout the period of rapid economic growth of the 1960's.
