Paradise Lost : PALAU

This is a story about a group of islanders who suffered violence, intimidation and murder amidst their struggle for "self-determination". In 1979, Palau adopted it's Constitution which was the first to include a ban on Nuclear tests. Their favourable strategic location, however, being the gateway to the Micronesian region, meant strong opposition from the US. This provision as expected, was strongly opposed and whilst several referendums were held on the request of the US millitary to vote on the "Compact of Free Association", (a $250 million dollar provision in return for exclusive millitary rights to any territories of Palau), none of the referendums held achieved the required vote. In August 1987, the House of Delegates following extreme pressure ammended the Constitution allowing a 67% vote which would allow nuclear equipment on Palau. A compelling testimony to a 40 year of leadership with nothing to show.
